Haydarpaşa Station, which holds a significant place in Istanbul’s historical heritage, will continue to preserve the city’s memory with a new mission. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism will revive the historic station project with a holistic approach.
As you may recall, the Gebze–Halkalı commuter line was renovated and transformed into the Marmaray line project. Following the completion of Marmaray, which runs under the sea to Sirkeci, the historic Haydarpaşa Station seemed to have fallen into disuse. The historic station, which first opened on the Asian side on September 22, 1872, remained in service until June 19, 2013. At that time, Haydarpaşa Station was constructed alongside Sirkeci Station as part of the Rumeli and Anatolia-Baghdad Railway lines. Over a period approaching one and a half centuries, Haydarpaşa Station accumulated countless memories in its location stretching along the Bosphorus shore. It had become one of the city’s iconic landmarks.
A project was launched to transform this unique space into a popular tourist destination, thereby lifting its sense of melancholy. Under the leadership of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the historic Haydarpaşa Station will be renovated. With its new concept, the historic station will be transformed into one of the most sought-after destinations in tourism, regaining the vibrancy of its former days.
As Karmod, we played a role in the transformation of the historic Haydarpaşa Station’s new concept. We completed the installation of a two-story steel-frame office building spanning 424 m² at the project site.
Our office building within Haydarpaşa Station will serve as the management office for the company responsible for the rail system infrastructure and superstructure projects in the initiative. We completed the installation of the office building in just 28 days and delivered it to the project.
Under a protocol between the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Turkish State Railways, Haydarpaşa Train Station is being revitalized through a holistic approach. As part of the project, which also includes the historic Sirkeci Station, these two historic sites will become key destinations for tourism. The new concept for Haydarpaşa Station will adopt a holistic approach not only architecturally but also in terms of cultural and social heritage.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism is adopting a holistic approach to the Haydarpaşa and Sirkeci Station project. With this project, railway transportation will continue in these historic areas. At the same time, these historic sites will come alive with library services, museums, and cultural and artistic events.
Archaeological excavations in Haydarpaşa have uncovered the “City of the Blind.” As part of the project, the Ministry aims to develop this area into an archaeopark. This will bring the cultural heritage to life for visitors to the region. An archaeology museum project is also among the initiatives to be implemented. Upon completion of the project, the Asian side will gain an archaeology museum.
The project will also include a performing arts center. A modern library will be established within the historic station building. This will include a children’s and baby library, specialized libraries, as well as a state-of-the-art Digital Library. A manuscript repository affiliated with the Presidency of the Institution of Manuscripts will also be established in the same area. With this project, Haydarpaşa Station will be transformed into a space that breathes new life.
