We Completed the Earthquake Safe Steel Mosque in 45 Days in Kahramanmaraş

As Karmod, we have completed and delivered one of the new generation steel system mosque projects with full earthquake safety. The construction process of Hz. Osman Mosque, which we built with hybrid steel safe structure system in Yeşilyurt neighbourhood of Afşin district of Kahramanmaraş, was completed in only 45 days. The mosque, which was built with the model we call hybrid steel with the synthesis of heavy steel and light steel structure system, is 285 m2 in size and has a capacity of 320 congregation.

The Adventure of Afşin Steel Mosque Project with Full Earthquake Safety

On 6 February 2023, 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes centred on Pazarcık and Elbistan districts of Kahramanmaraş deeply saddened us all. It was decided to demolish and rebuild the old building of Hz. Osman Mosque, which was one of the 28 mosques that were severely damaged in Afşin district in the sad earthquake, because the old building was not safe. A new mosque was to be built in the same place, but the main condition sought in the new mosque to be built was earthquake safety. With the initiatives of Afşin Mufti's Office and the financial support of the Netherlands Religious Foundation (HDV) for the reconstruction of Hz. Osman Mosque, the first step was taken to start the project. After the negotiations in our Karmod company, it was decided that the building system to be used in the new mosque would be steel construction. In order to meet the desired high elevation in the mosque, a hybrid steel project was started by synthesising the heavy steel system and light steel system. Mechanical installation projects were prepared together with static calculations at Karmod Technical Office. After the project approval, the production of the mosque started in Karmod Tuzla Orhanlı modern facilities. Steel components of the mosque, whose short pre-production was completed, were shipped to the project site. At the end of the works in the field, Karmod team completed the installation of Hz. Osman Mosque in 45 days.

No columns were used in the front congregation area of the mosque and 142 m² open area was provided

Afşin HDV Hz. Osman Mosque provided 142 m² open area without using any columns in the middle areas of the front congregation section. In the Orhanlı Sanayi Mosque, which we built before, we had realised 207 m² open area without columns. The elevation height in the front congregation area reached 5 metres 10 cm. In the front part of this area on the qibla side, the minbar on the right and the sermon pulpit on the left were hidden and raised. Transitions to the pulpit and pulpit are provided from the transition areas on the right and left of the mihrab. The mosque architecture is generally a modern reflection of Seljuk architecture. Interior decoration and ornaments are inspired by Seljuk and Ottoman motifs. At the back entrance of HDV Hz. Osman Mosque, there is a women's prayer hall and ablution centre on the right side. In the left section, there is a men's fountain. The last congregation area and the imam's room are the other sections at the entrance of the mosque.
